Grades K-7

The instructional program at Liberty Christian School is predicated on the belief that every child should receive educational experiences appropriate to his or her individual abilities, interests, and learning styles. Individual uniqueness is respected and provided for and every effort is made to adapt learning experiences to the wide variety of student needs. Greater emphasis is placed on creative effort, intellectual initiative, critical thinking, social adjustment, social responsibility, and spiritual and moral growth. Learning opportunities are provided through thematic instruction. Liberty Christian School seeks to teach the whole child: mind, body, and spirit.

Using theme-based teaching is typical of the lower elementary grades. All classes involve hands-on experiences while providing the students with valuable information. The principles of developmentally appropriate practices are applied to the instructional process. Biblical principles are integrated into the curriculum in a very natural way.

The students are offered unique opportunities in the fine arts areas which include Art, Music, and Spanish. The children also experience a structured Physical Education class twice a week.

Students may participate in an extra curricular sports program.

Language Arts

The students are immersed in quality children’s literature and are encouraged to respond to the curriculum in a variety of ways. The reading program is driven through the use of literature-based materials. We strive to expose the students to Christian-based literature that teach moral values. Phonetic skills are systematically developed through literature so that the students learn to decode individual words while building comprehension skills. Reading instruction at the kindergarten and first grade levels is phonics based.

Mathematics

The math program is designed to meet the standards of learning issued by the state of Virginia. These standards, including problem solving and reasoning, are incorporated into the daily lessons through questions and activities using manipulatives. Drilling the basic math facts is an important part of the student’s learning, as well as an approach toward developing higher-order thinking skills. The McGraw-Hill textbooks series is used in Grades 1-7. Kindergarten utilizes the Math Their Way curriculum which is manipulative based.

Science

Science is a hands-on program which encourages student to become actively involved in scientific theory. Students are equipped to discover the infinite complexity and the amazing orderliness of God’s world though an exciting study of life, earth, and physical science from a Christian perspective. Concrete, creative learning experiences will enrich the student’s knowledge of creation, affirm their faith in the Lord, and enable them to use science for the glory of God.

History-Social Studies-Geography

Students gain the knowledge, skills, and values needed for the pursuit of productive citizenship through studies of their world, country, state, community, and home. Students will understand and know how to analyze chronological relationships and develop a sense of historical perspective. The school’s approach guides students to understand God’s redemptive plan for mankind through the unfolding of various events. As the units of study were written, the standards of learning were used as the framework for the development of the unit of study.

Bible

Though the teaching the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our teachers can demonstrate the love that the Lord has for us. The Bible curriculum focuses on strong character development. The students participate in weekly scripture memorization. It is the goal of Liberty Christian School to teach the students to love God with all of his heart, soul, and mind. We teach directly from God’s Word. Our approach aims at training and developing students to become knowledgeable and dedicated servants of Jesus Christ.
